This compact device operates on a principle of light absorption to provide vital health data non-invasively. When you place your finger inside the probe, the device painlessly sends two distinct wavelengths of light—typically red and infrared—through the tissue to a sensor on the other side.

Because oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood absorb these lights differently, the oximeter can accurately calculate the percentage of hemoglobin in your arterial blood that is saturated with oxygen. This result is displayed as your peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2). Simultaneously, the device detects the pulsation of blood flow with each heartbeat to calculate and display your current pulse rate.

The entire process is quick and comfortable, offering a convenient window into your respiratory and circulatory status. This measurement is particularly useful as a drop in blood oxygen saturation can be an early indicator of respiratory issues, including those associated with illnesses such as COVID-19, allowing for timely medical consultation.

The standard fingertip pulse oximeter is specifically designed and optimized for spot-checking, meaning it is intended to take a quick reading at a single moment in time. It is ideal for periodic checks throughout the day to establish your normal levels or to monitor a known condition. However, for situations requiring continuous, long-term monitoring of oxygen levels, a different model designed specifically for that purpose would be more appropriate.

You can then toggle the bright, easy-to-read LCD display between portrait and landscape orientation by pressing the same button. Maintaining the device requires very little effort. It does not need any special maintenance apart from timely battery replacement; it comes ready to use with two included AAA batteries. Keeping the device clean is important for hygiene and accuracy. To clean it, simply wipe the areas that come into contact with the skin using a soft cloth lightly dampened with 70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). Never submerge the device in liquid.
