Spondylolisthesis is the slippage or displacement of one vertebra relative to another. It is a general term that covers displacment in many directions, each with distinct symptoms and treatments. Forward displacement is called anterolisthesis while backward displacement is referred to as retrolisthesis. Symptoms of the former include a general stiffening of the back and tightening of the hamstrings. a leaning forward posture and a waddle like gait. This form of the condition can have several causes, including degenerative, traumatic and post surgical. The symptoms of retrolisthesis include pain, rigidity and various neurologic symptoms. Back braces can provide the compression and support needed to address some of the symptoms of these conditions. However, care should be taken to choose a support based on medical advice.
