A golfers elbow brace will apply compression to the forearm muscles that connect to the damaged tendons characteristic to that condition (golfers elbow). Golfers elbow is caused by overwork of the forearm muscles. This results in micro tearing of the tendons that connect those muscles to the inner elbow. The result is pain and tenderness near the bony prominence on the inner elbow and other symptoms we describe here.
By exerting compression on the forearm muscles, a brace for golfers elbow will absorb some of the energy and vibrations that would otherwise reach the tendons. This absorption allows the tendons to rest and heal naturally.
Types Of Golfers Elbow Brace
Like a tennis elbow brace, a brace for golfers elbow can be one of the following three types:
An epicondylitis clasp made from plastic that the patient wears around his or her arm. The clasp is secured to the arm by a strap and applies pressure to the forearm muscles;
An elbow strap that the patient wraps around the forearm. It applies pressure to the forearm muscles. This helps it absorb energy travelling along the arm in much the same way that the clasp does; or
An elbow sleeve that applies pressure over a broader area of the elbow/upper arm. You may prefer to wear a sleeve if your golfers elbow is compounded by some other elbow injury that also requires a brace.
The advantage of the epicondylitis clasp is precision. It can directly target the area that produces the most pain relief. However, it requires skill to apply the clasp with the necessary precision.
As a golfers elbow brace, the strap is an inexpensive option and is easy to apply. However, it does not have the precision of the clasp.
A tennis sleeve offers heat therapy in addition to compression. Additionally, it sometimes comes with a strap that allows the user to combine all round elbow compression with targeted compression to a specific area. This type of elbow brace is suitable for those suffering from golfers elbow in combination with more general elbow pain.
What’s the Difference Between A Brace For Golfers Elbow & One For Tennis Elbow?
In practice, there will be little or no difference between an elbow support for golfers elbow and one for tennis elbow. The key difference lies in how they will be worn. The golfers elbow brace will direct its compression to the inner elbow while the tennis elbow brace will focus on the outer elbow.
Choosing An Elbow Brace
As with any elbow brace, the choice must be preceded by a careful perusal of the sizing chart and instructions for the brace. A brace that is too small will be uncomfortable to wear and the patient will always look for reasons not to wear it. This will reduce its effectiveness in treating golfers elbow.
On the other hand, if the brace is too large it will not apply sufficient compression and will be equally ineffective as a therapeutic device.
