Infection Control (PPE)
Infection control equipment comprises protective articles of clothing, gloves, face shields, goggles, face masks and respirators. These articles protect the wearer from bacteriological or viral infection. Public health practitioners also refer to this equipment as personal protection equipment or PPE.
Infection control equipment is commonly used in healthcare settings like doctors’ offices and hospitals. It functions as a barrier between infectious agents and the skin, eyes, nose or mouth. This blocks transmission of agents that may be present in respiratory secretions, blood or other body fluids. In addition to healthcare workers, PPE can also protect patients, particularly those with deficient immune systems, from the risk of infection.
The proper use of infection control equipment includes techniques in putting it on, taking it off and disposing of it. If the wearer does any of these things incorrectly, he or she may still be subject to the risk of infection. PPE plays a critical role in the control of infection risk. This means that many PPE categories are subject to regulatory standards relating to the quality of construction.
