Achilles tendinosis is characterized by soreness and/or stiffness of the Achilles tendon (the largest tendon in the body). The tendon can swell and may cause pain. This is a common overuse condition among athletes, runners and patients who have calf tightness. The tendinosis may occur in the middle of the tendon – when this happens, it is known as midsubstance tendinosis. It may also occur at the point where the tendon connects to the heel bone. When this happens, the condition is known as insertional Achilles tendinosis.
